Scandinavian power company Fortum is the top producer of certified renewable electricity in Finland and Sweden. Much of it comes from 169 hydroelectric plants, some more than a century old, that use fast-flowing water to spin turbines and generate power. How do you make sure that something built during the flapper era remains reliable and up to snuff?

Android Security

Keeping Internet service providers (ISPs) at bay, Google appears to be planning to add "DNS over TLS" support to Android. The new development will encrypt your domain name server (DNS) requests to massively protect your Web history and make the experience more secure and safe, without the use of any third-party virtual private network (VPN) or proxy.

Highlights of Android new 'DNS over TLS' supports:

  • The addition of "DNS over TLS" support on Android will limit the use case
  • Commits on Android Open Source Project have suggested the new development
  • Android 8.1 could be the first version to get new support

Details are light at the moment, but a bit of news out of Google’s Playtime developer event this morning: the company is launching a Google Play bug bounty program that’ll encourage researchers to poke around and look for vulnerabilities in some of Android’s most popular apps (both those built by Google and those built by third-party devs.)

Download LetterMagic here

Called the “Google Play Security Reward” program, the new program aims to get researchers to work directly with Android app developers to find vulnerabilities.

If you help a developer squash a bug, Google will pay you $1,000 (on top of whatever bounty the third-party dev themselves might pay).

Google is tapping HackerOne to handle much of the back end for this program, from submitting reports to inviting white-hat hackers into new parts of the program as they roll out.
high performance electric car
mashable.com
Volvo  made a big commitment earlier this year to put electric motors in all of its vehicles by 2019 — and now the automaker will double down on electrification with an entirely new luxury car brand.

Volvo and its Chinese parent company, Geely Holdings, just announced that they'll invest about $755 million together to create Polestar, which will manufacture electrified vehicles in China. The new brand will be a "fully consolidated Volvo Cars subsidiary," focused solely on creating electric, performance-first vehicles.

Sudar Pichai - Google CEO

SUNDAR PICHAI SAYS THE FUTURE OF GOOGLE IS AI. BUT CAN HE FIX THE ALGORITHM?

I was asking in the context of the aftermath of the 2016 election and the misinformation that companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Google were found to have spread. Pichai, I found out later, had a rough idea that something was going wrong with one of his algorithms as we were speaking. So his answer, I think it's fair to say, also serves as a response to the widespread criticisms the company faced in the days after the shooting.

Apple iOS 11.1 New Emoji

More animals and mythical creatures like T-Rex, Zebra, Zombie and Elf are a fun way to describe situations and new Star-Struck and Exploding Head smiley faces make any message more fun.
Its time for Augmented Reality(AR) to shine.

When Google announced its Daydream View headset last year, it was a sign that the search giant was ready to take VR to the masses. It's dabbled in VR before with Cardboard, but the View was a much more serious effort, with its fabric-clad design and user-friendly remote. Which is why it's such a surprise that Google didn't really spend a lot of time on VR at its Pixel 2 event. The company mentioned the new Daydream View -- now in colors! -- but didn't really say much more beyond that. Instead, Google was much more excited to talk about something else: AR.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Weeks after Beijing banned fundraising through token launches and ordered some bitcoin exchanges to shut, casting a chill over the cryptocurrency industry, traders say that the market is far from dead.

While several exchanges have announced that they will close by the end of this month, traders have now moved to buy and sell bitcoin directly with each other on peer-to-peer marketplaces and messenger apps. Industry insiders say some overseas-based initial coin offerings (ICOs) are still being marketed.

Although the crackdown has dissuaded large swathes of less-experienced investors from participating in the trade, market participants point to the limits Chinese regulators ultimately face in controlling the industry, where many users are anonymous and difficult to track.

In the short-run, the crackdown has also created an arbitrage opportunity for investors, with the price of bitcoin in China now trading at a discount to overseas exchanges.

Flyboard Air hoverboard from Zapato Recing.

Flyboard Air Hoverboard

When you post video of your new jet powered hoverboard, and half the world thinks it has to be fake, you know you've got something good. But Frank Zapata's Flyboard Air is no hoax, it's the real deal. How does one know? All you gotta do is ask him.

These days, with millions of astute viewers scrutizing every physical detail, the easiest way to make a convincing video that gets all the physics of something like a jetpack flight right, is to first make the jetpack. What's the hardest part of making a magic flying carpet you might ask? "The power is there", says Frank, "and has been for some time, the trick is controlling it." In other words, the technical challenge is building a responsive interface that integrates the control capabilities of the human nervous system and musculature with that of your machine.

Where the response time of a man-sized electric fan propulsion system may be around a second, a turbine of a similar power output would have a minimum lag of about three seconds. That's one of the reasons, if not the main reason that turbine powered cars never really took off. But the ear doesn't lie. If your craft sounds more like a hummingbird than a fighter jet, you can expect it to behave more like one in a strong headwind.

Why former Apple CEO Steve Jobs cried in front of his co-workers?

A formal CEO Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs - as brilliant as he was - is sometimes remembered for his not-so-nice side. For example, he often told his engineers, "This is s---" when reviewing their work, according to Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve.

But former Apple chief executive John Sculley, 76, says that was just one side of Steve. "So many of the movies and portrayals of Steve Jobs just focus on the 'bad boy' Steve, or the idea that he wasn't perfect," Sculley said. "But they don't explain why so many people loved working for him as difficult as he was, and the reason is because he was an incredibly emotional person."
