Top 10 simple tools for developing mobile application

Android Develop

Alpha Anywhere
Alpha Anywhere is a database-oriented, rapid app development tool that shines at creating Web and hybrid mobile apps that work offline. It allows developers to build good apps quickly, with surprisingly solid performance and nativelike look and feel.

Alpha Anywhere’s SQL database support is especially strong because it allows you to use the native SQL dialects of each database if you wish, or you can go with Alpha’s Portable SQL facility, which will emit the appropriate native SQL for the current database connection. Alpha’s support for offline mobile operation is also quite complete. It reduces the development of data conflict resolution logic to a few clicks.

Google Maps, one of the powerful, full featured navigation apps now provide editing of road within the app. Now user can easily edit the road to correct it.

Earlier this week, Google rolled out a new home-screen for Google Map users on Android in India. The company has now added the ability to edit the roads and other places. This feature is available to users of both Android and iOS apps. It is said to replace the Map Maker service that was shut down earlier this week.
You won't be able to see this new feature right away as it is hidden under other options inside the app. Here's how you can access the feature.
Details are light at the moment, but a bit of news out of Google’s Playtime developer event this morning: the company is launching a Google Play bug bounty program that’ll encourage researchers to poke around and look for vulnerabilities in some of Android’s most popular apps (both those built by Google and those built by third-party devs.)

Download LetterMagic here

Called the “Google Play Security Reward” program, the new program aims to get researchers to work directly with Android app developers to find vulnerabilities.

If you help a developer squash a bug, Google will pay you $1,000 (on top of whatever bounty the third-party dev themselves might pay).

Google is tapping HackerOne to handle much of the back end for this program, from submitting reports to inviting white-hat hackers into new parts of the program as they roll out.
In a perfect Android world, the main language of Java is really modern, clear, and elegant. You can write less by doing more, and whenever a new feature appears, developers can use it just by increasing version in Gradle. Then while creating a very nice app, it appears fully testable, extensible, and maintainable. Our activities are not too large and complicated, we can change data sources from database to web without tons of differences, and so on. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, the Android world isn’t this ideal. Google is still striving for perfection, but we all know that ideal worlds don’t exist. Thus, we have to help ourselves in that great journey in the Android world.

Kotlin and Java - Android
Kotlin is a popular new player in the Android world. But can it ever replace Java?
What Is Kotlin, and Why Should You Use It?
So, the first language. I think that Java isn’t the master of elegance or clarity, and it is neither modern nor expressive (and I’m guessing you agree). The disadvantage is that below Android N, we are still limited to Java 6 (including some small parts of Java 7). Developers can also attach RetroLambda to use lambda expressions in their code, which is very useful while using RxJava. Above Android N, we can use some of Java 8’s new functionalities, but it’s still that old, heavy Java. Very often I hear Android developers say “I wish Android supported a nicer language, like iOS does with Swift”. And what if I told you that you can use a very nice, simple language, with null safety, lambdas, and many other nice new features? Welcome to Kotlin.

On Wednesday, the European Union slapped a record 4.34 billion euro ($5 billion/£3.9billion) fine on Google for using its Android phone software to stifle competition.

The European Commission said the firm had used the mobile operating system to illegally "cement its dominant position" in search.

The firm's parent Alphabet has been given 90 days to change its business practices or face further penalties of up to 5% of its average global daily turnover.

EU antitrust regulators ruled that the company, whose Android software powers more than 80 percent of the world's smartphones, pushed consumers to its search engine, further weakening rival search providers and app makers.

"Google has used Android as a vehicle to cement the dominance of its search engine," Margrethe Vestager, the EU's competition commissioner, said in the decision. "These practices have denied rivals the chance to innovate and compete on the merits."

While Google plans to appeal the ruling, the decision as it stands could have wide implications for the company's advertising business, as well as for phone manufacturers and app developers.

What did Google do?
The EU has a fundamental problem with the agreements between Google and phone makers like Samsung over the use of Android.

Although Google offers the open source mobile software for free, the EU takes issue with the requirements placed on manufacturers to pre-install Google's search and Chrome browser apps if they want to license the Play app store. Google actually ties Play to a suite of 11 different apps, including Maps, Gmail and Docs, but the only ones that the EU has called for it to separate from Play are Chrome and Search.

The EU also says that it's illegal for Google to pay manufacturers and carriers to exclusively pre-install Google's search app on phones, which it says it did between 2011 and 2014, and to use so-called anti-fragmentation agreements to prevent phone makers from selling modified versions of Android.

What's Google's argument?
In a blog post on the ruling, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that Android has increased competition, not diminished it.

Google's main rebuttal is that Android users can easily remove the pre-installed apps and download third-party alternatives. According to Pichai, a "typical Android user" installs 50 apps.

Pichai said that phone manufactures can also choose to modify Android, citing Amazon's line of Fire products (though he doesn't mention the EU's accusation that its agreements with phone makers kept other manufacturers from making phones with FireOS), and that Android has compatibility rules to ensure that app developers' products work across devices.

Whatsapp Android

A multi-platform WhatsApp, removing difficulty for their user day by day. Now user of WhatsApp Android, is able to filter their notifications of whatsApp that how its appears.

Here's what the problem was: Android 8.0 Oreo, released in August 2017, introduced "notification channels" to Android phones.

This feature is pretty convenient, in theory. It allows users to assign priority to different types of notification. For example, I could set a Facebook notification to "Urgent" importance, meaning it would make a noise and show a message on my screen, and a Facebook friend request to "Medium" importance, meaning I'd see a message, but hear no sound.

The problem is that apps have to be individually updated by their third-party developers to include notification channel functionality. Until an app was optimized for Android 8.0 Oreo, users couldn't assign any importance to notifications from that app.

This means for the past few months, it was impossible to change WhatsApp notifications at all. You couldn't control whether it made a noise or showed an icon, or disable certain notifications without disabling all of the app's notifications.

There are 10 notification channels that you can now customize for different settings: group notifications, message notifications, chat history backup, critical app alerts, failure notifications, media playback, uncategorized, other notifications, sending media, and silent notifications. This means you could put high importance on your message notifications, but low importance on your group notifications, and disable uncategorized notifications, for example.

WhatsApp did not respond to a request for comment.

The customization is super easy to do. The next time you see a WhatsApp notification on your Android device, press and hold it, then select "All Categories."

Then, you can choose what to do with each notification.

Why you may need it?

Google's much-anticipated Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL launch event is merely a day away, and we are expecting new hardware with the company's "Made by Google" tag. The event's biggest stars are likely to be the new Pixel smartphones, but apart from them, Google is also likely to launch new Chromebook - Pixelbook, mini variant of its Home smart speaker, and the next generation of Daydream VR headsets.

Highlights:

  • A Twitter user spotted Home Mini device in Home app
  • The mini speaker likely to be priced at $49
  • Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL said to be biggest stars of the event

At its Google for India event in New Delhi today, the company announced a new mobile app designed with users in India in mind: YouTube Go.

The app brings YouTube to your mobile device with a slew of options to help you save on your carrier’s data fees and to work in areas with poor connectivity.

YouTube Go features video previews in the form of slideshows for each clip, so can get an idea of what it’s about before you stream or save it to your device. You can also see its file size before downloading, along with how much storage space you have left on your phone.

Building an app just got a lot easier thanks to Google’s release of Android Studio 2.0. Following the highly successful initial launch of its official integrated development environment (IDE) back in 2013, the Internet giant has now taken things to the next level with improvements to its Android Studio. With 1.6 million apps already inundating its Play Store, it’s clear that developers are already eager to build apps for Google, but now, things are about to get faster, higher quality, and just all around better.

Google Android N (7.0) developer preview released, and its features out.

Android N Mobile

Surprise for developer and Android lover that Google released developer preview of upcoming android version, code named as "N". This is the first time ever that the engineering hulk broke from its custom of releasing new versions of its popular mobile operating system Explaining the rationale behind the move, Google’s SVP for Android, Chrome OS and Chromecast, Hiroshi Lockheimer, wrote on Medium, "By releasing the first preview and asking for your feedback now (in March!), we’ll be able to act on that feedback while still being able to hand off the final N release to device makers this summer, so they can get their hands on the latest version of Android earlier than ever. Plus, you’ll be able to use this additional time to support all of the new goodies in N in your apps."

How to write clean code and how to easily handle exception?
Exception Handling Code
Exceptions are as old as programming itself. Back in the days when programming was done in hardware, or via low-level programming languages, exceptions were used to alter the flow of the program, and to avoid hardware failures. Today, Wikipedia defines exceptions as:

anomalous or exceptional conditions requiring special processing – often changing the normal flow of program execution…

And that handling them requires:

Specialized programming language constructs or computer hardware mechanisms.

So, exceptions require special treatment, and an unhandled exception may cause unexpected behavior. The results are often spectacular. In 1996, the famous Ariane 5 rocket launch failure was attributed to an unhandled overflow exception. History’s Worst Software Bugs contains some other bugs that could be attributed to unhandled or miss-handled exceptions.

Over time, these errors, and countless others (that were, perhaps, not as dramatic, but still catastrophic for those involved) contributed to the impression that exceptions are bad.

Telegram Multiple Account

A new update 4.7 is rolling out which support multiple accounts on single Android device. Earlier last month, secure messaging app Telegram rolled out update 4.6 that brought along features like granular settings for auto-downloading media, full link previews for Instagram posts and tweets, and more. Obviously, you'll still need separate phone numbers for each account, but switching between them is as easy and seamless as it is in apps like Gmail. Some of these themes even allow users to further customize the look of the app by picking an accent color. A swipe from the left will bring out the menu where users can switch between accounts.

The latest version is available in the Play Store, but you can also grab Telegram 4.7 from APK Mirror.

WhatsApp Delete for everyone
WhatsApp new feature "Delete for everyone" now slowly rolling out to some devices. Now user can delete their accidentally sent message from every chat screen.

To use this feature both user must have the latest version of WhatsApp and it only works within 7 minutes of sending the message.

The feature is said to be one of the most requested one, and is likely to make things slightly easier for WhatsApp users. The report says that it will be called 'Delete for Everyone' and several users have started noticing the feature in the latest WhatsApp version when they press the trash icon. Alongside Delete for Everyone, users will also see the Delete for Me option, if they only want to delete the message from their phone.
