Soon after WhatsApp’s decision to withdraw support for BlackBerry 10 OS and its older operating systems, its parent company Facebook has now announced that it will not support BlackBerry’s mobile operating systems - BlackBerry 10 (BB10) and BlackBerry OS 7.1.
The social networking giant has announced that starting March 31, a lot of core functionality will be removed from the Facebook app on devices running BB10 and BlackBerry OS 7.1. Facebook has also revealed that it plans to withdraw support for its primary API for BlackBerry devices by the end of the year. Users who still want to use Facebook will now have to access it through a webpage.
“The current BlackBerry Facebook application will cease to work on BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS versions 7.1 and earlier,” said BlackBerry on its official support page.
BlackBerry’s support page further adds that a lot of Facebook’s important features on BlackBerry devices such as Facebook contact synchronization, BlackBerry hub integration and notifications will be lost. BlackBerry users will also lose the ability to share images or videos directly on Facebook, which they could earlier do via the Share icon.
“We are extremely disappointed in their decision as we know so many users love these apps. We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands. Despite this, we have worked hard to ensure our end users have the best experience in light of this decision, and are continuing to search for alternate solutions,” said BlackBerry. in a blog post.
Recently, even Facebook-owned popular instant messaging application WhatsApp also decided to end support for BlackBerry devices, along with Symbian and Windows Phone 7.1 devices by the end of 2016.
